چکیده

To the editor: In their recent article, Macé et al. pointed appropriately to the many disturbing clinical similarities between haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) due to Seoul virus (SEOV) infection – an emerging zoonosis – and two pregnancy-related pathologies affecting mainly the liver, acute fatty liver of pregnancy (AFLP) syndrome and haemolysis, elevated liver enzymes and low platelet count (HELLP) syndrome [1]. At present, HFRS is one of the most frequent, but still heavily underestimated, forms of acute infectious kidney injury, with up to 200,000 cases per year worldwide. Moreover, SEOV affects not only the kidneys, but also often the liver as well [2].

Authors reply: Distinguishing between hantavirus-induced haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome and pregnancy-induced liver pathologies (AFLP and HELLP syndromes).

To the editor: We thank Clement et al. for their interest in our work [1] and for questioning the diagnostic sequence and management of such a complex clinical and biological situation. During pregnancy, diagnosis of haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) caused by hantaviruses, including Seoul virus (SEOV), can easily be missed due to its rarity and its ‘pseudo-vasculoplacental’ clinica...

Epidemic hemorrhagic fever complicated with late pregnancy

RATIONALE Hantaviruses cause two forms of diseases in humans, namely hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) and hantavirus pulmonary syndrome. Hantavirus infections can occur in pregnant women, and could influence the maternal and fetal outcomes, although this is a rare finding, even in endemic areas. PATIENT CONCERNS In this report, we describe anunusual case involving a pregnant woman...

Severe Seoul hantavirus infection in a pregnant woman, France, October 2012.

We report the first detection of Seoul virus (SEOV) in humans in Europe, causing severe disease in a pregnant woman in France in October 2012. The patient's laboratory test results mimicked that of pregnancy-induced liver pathologies such as acute fatty liver of pregnancy (AFLP) with severe renal failure. This led to an emergency delivery (at 27 weeks' gestation). On the basis of gene S (small)...

Acute Interstitial Nephritis Proteinuria and Herpes Simplex Virus Hepatitis in Pregnancy Mimic HELLP Syndrome (Hemolysis, Elevated Liver Enzymes, Low Platelets)

Elevated transaminases, hemolysis, and thrombocytopenia in pregnancy are most often caused by a preeclampsia variant-HELLP syndrome (hemolysis, elevated liver enzymes, low platelets). In atypical cases, it is important to consider other causes, such as herpes simplex virus (HSV) hepatitis. Acute interstitial nephritis (AIN)-induced proteinuria can make distinguishing HELLP from its mimics more ...
